Central Chamber of % Commerce forwarded a . letter to ' the ■ Prime Minister expressing regret that the Government was unable to prevent the merger of the Union Steam Ship Company with the P. and O. Company, and urging the Government to acquire a controlling interest in the proposed Dominion Shipping Company. This, it was stated^: was the only apparent safeguard; for the future of New Zealand's trade interests; which depended on a frequent rand reliable service and reasonable freights.
