NAVAL SIDE OF THE WAR.

AMERICAN PLAN OF ATTACK. I

REJECTED BY EXPERTS. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. (Reed. 10.30 p.m.) NEW YORK, July 23. The Washington correspondent of the New York World states that Admiral Sims, an American naval officer, who is on Joan to the allies, and allied naval exparts oppose the suggestion made in America for an attack on the bases of German submarines, regarding the German naval defences as impregnable. Experts say an attack would result unfavourably to the allies. HELIGOLAND BIGHT ACTION. DISTRIBUTION OF BOUNTY. (Received 11 p.m.) LONDON, July 23. The Prize Court has granted bounty amounting to £6415 to the companies of the following warships in connection with the sinking of the German light cruisers Koine, Mainz, and Ariadne, and the tor-pedo-boat VlB7, in the battle of Heligoland Bight in August, 1914:—Princess Royal, Queen Mary, New Zealand, Birmingham. Falmouth, Liverpool, Arethusa, Lurcher, Fife, Drake, Leonidas, and several submarines. The Koine had a crew of 467, the Mainz 428, the Ariadne 297, and the VlB7 93. The action in Heligoland Bight was the first of any consequence in the war. It was fought, in the early morning of August 28, 1914, when strong forces of British destroyers, suported by light cruisers and battle cruisers, intercepted and attacked German destroyers and cruisers guarding the approach to the German coast in Heligoland Bight. The only British ships damaged were the flotilla cruiser Amethyst and the destroyer Laertes.
