BRITISH GAIN TO THE SOUTH OF LENS.

AIRMEN HAVE BUSY AND SUCCESSFUL DAY.

Australian and N.Z. Cable and Renter. (Received 11 p.m.) LONDON, July 23. A report from Sir Douglas Haig states: We carried out a successful local operation south of Avion, a mile south of Lens, to-day. We reached our objectives, with little loss, taking 51 prisoners. We raided and bombed dug-outs southward of Havrincourtsouth-west of Cambrai—and in the neighbourhoods of Bullecourt and Hollebeke. We repulsed raids at Lombaertzyde and south-east of Loos.

A later report from Sir Douglas Haig states: The raid south of Avion penetrated the enemy's positions on a front of 600 yds to ,a depth of 300 yds. We inflicted heavy casualties and much damage. We successfully raided a strongly-held farm east of Costaverne, and repulsed an enemy attack north-west of Cherisy. There was aerial fighting all day yesterday. The visibility was excellent, and our aeroplanes successfully co-operated with the artillery in addition to dropping three tons of bombs on ammunition dumps and railway sidings with good results. We brought down 14 aeroplanes, including a raider returning from England. Nine of ours are missing.
