THE TERM OF ENLISTMENT.

WAR PERIOD AND SIX MONTHS. [bt telegraph—special CORRESPONDENT.] WELLINGTON. Wednesday. The Minister for Defence was asked a question in the House of Representatives to-day by Mr. R. McCallum (Wairau) as to the term for which New Zealand soldiers were enlisted. Mr. McCallum said he was under the impression that New Zealanders were enlisted for "three years, or the duration," as in England, and as the term of three years was nearing completion, he asked the Minister to explain the position.

Sir James Allen said that in the Expeditionary Forces Act the period of enlistment was defined as " for the period of the present war with Germany and six months thereafter, or such shorter period as the Government thinks fit." It might be necessary, he said, to extend the period of six months, because it might not be possible to get all the men back to New Zealand within that period.
