ANTI-TREATING LAW.
AUSTRALIAN COMMENT.
" IGNORED IN NEW ZEALAND."
A. and N.Z. Cable. SYDNEY, July 12. According to a Daily Telegraph correspondent, who recently spent several months travelling over all parts of New Zealand, the anti-treating law is practically ignored. The only effect is to provide plain clothes constables with additional opportunities for getting pleasantly intoxicated at the expense of the country. He mentions the manoeuvres employed to get round the law, adding that such manoeuvres are rarely necessary, and the treat" is usually transacted in the oldtime way. He soon found that if he observed the law he only made himself conspicuous.
PERTH. July 12.
A public meeting in the Town Hall, by a large majority, negatived a motion in favour of anti-treating legislation during the currency of the war.
