STRONG ENEMY ATTACK ON THE DUNES SECTOR.

GERMANS GAIN GROUND ON FRONT OF 1400 YARDS.

BRITISH SUCCESSFUL IN A COUNTER-ATTACK.

Australian and N.Z Cable and Reuter. (Received 7.15 p.m.) LONDON. July 11. A report from Sir Douglas Haig states: After an intense bomlasting 24 hours, the enemy made a determined attackon the Nieuport front on Tuesday evening. The concentrated and heavy nature of the enemy's artillery fire levelled the defences of the dunes sector near the coast. This sector had been isolated by the destruction of the bridges on the Yser. The enemy here penetrated our positions on a front of 1400 yds to a depth of 600 yds, and reached the right bank of the Yser near the sea. After gaining some of our advanced positions further south, opposite Lombartzyde, the enemy were driven out by a counter-attack.

A later report from Sir Douglas Haig states: The extreme intensity of the enemy's fire on the Nieuport front has now diminished, but our guns continue to be active.

(Received 11.40 p.m.) LONDON. July 11. A German communique states: Our marine infantry, after artillery preparation, stormed positions between the coast and Lombartzyde, and drove the enemy across the Yser. We captured 1350 prisoners, and inflicted heavy losses.. Our airmen, despite the storm, contributed to the success.
