PHYSICAL INSTRUCTION. SEVERAL GRANTS REQUESTED. I ! The Auckland Education Board met ! yesterday. Present: Mr. J. D. McKenzie, |in the chair Mrs. F. E. Baume, and I Messrs. G. J. Garland, W. Murray. ; The Education Department advised | that in view of the targe number o; ! schools and of children in the Auckland | education district arrangements had been ' made lur the appointment of an sddi. | tioiiai physical instructor, to be employed temporarily until the end of the war. Mis. D. N. iShakespear, of Auckland, would shortly report lor duty in this capacity. With regard to the proposal to extend the Christmas holiday to enable senior pupils to perform agricultural work, a letter was received irom the National Efficiency .Board stating it would be unnecessary to alter the holidays observed by either primary or technical schools. Advice was received that the establishment of schools in the Maihiihi and K.iingiatea halls had been approved by the Minister for Education. It was decided to make application for grants for the erection of a school at Eaihere and for additions to the Hautapn and Hikurangi schools. On the recommendation of Mr. J. P. Kalaugher, supervisor of the manual and technical branch, it was decided to apply to the Department for a grant of &sUbl) for the erection of technical school buildI ings at Hamilton. Mr. Kalaugher's report j drew attention to the poor attendance at | technical classes of boys engaged in ! postal, duties, and, on the motion of Mr. i Auld. it was decided to communicate with i the head of the Postal Department asking ! for better co-operation between officials and their employees, so as to enable the boys to attend these classes. On the recommendation of the Finance Committee, a sub-committee, consisting of the town members of the board, was appointed to interview the Mayor with reference to the request of the Educational Institute for the Buffalo system of school libraries to be extended to country districts. A recommendation that the.Okahu j .No. 1 and No. 2 schools be reopened was : also adopted. j The board authorised the following apI pomtments :—Mr. N. S. Fox, headmaster, jOnewhero; Miss E. A.
