ITALIAN COALITION.
NO-CONFIDENCE MOTION.
PREMIER'S FIRM STAND.
A- and N.Z. Cable.
LONDON. July 2.
The Rome correspondent of the Daily Chronicle states that the recent vote of confidence in the Italian Government followed an attempt by supporters of Signor Giolitti, Leader of the Opposition, in the Chamber of Deputies, on the ground of the Government's alleged shortcomings, especially in the sphere of economies, to secure reconstruction of the Ministry under Signor Orlando, the present Minister for the Interior. Baron Sonnino's firm threat that in such event he would resign the portfolio of Foreign Affairs, I brought them to their senses, and a vote of confidence in the Boselli coalition was i i carried by 361 votes so 63. All groups except the Socialist Neutralists and Republicans realise that Baron Sonnino's disappearance at this juncture would precipitate a national disaster and therefore shrank with dramatic suddenness from the verge of an unsounded abyss. Another message states that Signor Boselli's success was partly due to his tenacious resistance to the clamour for the appointment of a special committee inside the Cabinet. He argued that similar experiments by France and England did not justify imitation by Italy.
