TRADE WITH FIJI.
NEGLECTED OPPORTUNITY. (From the HERALD of July 3, 1867.) While we are •waiting for a goldfield to turn up, and for a change in the present general slackness of trade to come about by the sure, though gradual"," 1 opening up to cultivation of our country districts, it does strike us that many sources of wealth and profit are being allowed to pass by neglected, which might materially hasten that period, if undertaken. Amongst these is the neglect of the trade with Fiji, shown by our mercantile and commercial men. It is difficult, indeed, to see how so profitable a field has been left unworked by them. Geographically considered, Auckland should be the great depot of the Island trade, but it would seem that Auckland has closed her eyes to this advantage of position, and is leaving Sydney, which is but a few shades less apathetic than herself in the matter, to take advantage of her maritime position.
