BOROUGH COUNCIL "BREEZE"
A itveli interlude occurred in the course of last night's meeting of the Onehunga Borough Council, members protesting vigorously againßt a remark made by the Mayor, Mr. J. J. Boyd. Exception had been taken by some members to the employment of a man who, it was alleged, had not fulfilled his military obligations, but eventually authority for payment to him was passed. When the motion was carried the Mayor remarked: "It does not matter to me if it was a German who did the work; it would not affect the work."
Mr. Davias was on his feet in an instant, profiting very strongly against this remark. He said the Mayor should be ashamed of himself for making it. Other members raised a strcj protest, their remarks receiving the approbation of the ratepayers present. Mr. Boyd said there were a number of good Germans in Wellington. On Mr. Davies stating that he would make the Mayor's statement known, Mr. Boyd said he did not care what he did in the matter.
Mr. Foote remarked that if Germans were naturalised they ought to be on the same footing as Britishers. The matter was dropped after some further discussion.
