GERMANS CONTINUE ATTACKS AGAINST THE FRENCH.

.VIOLENT ASSAULT ON NARROW FRONT ON THE AISNE.

HEAVY LOSSES SUSTAINED FOR MINOR ADVANTAGE. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. Australian and N.Z. Cable and Reuter. (Received 10.55 p.m.) PARIS, July 3. A communique states: A bombardment of redoubled intensity in the Cerny-Ailles sector was followed last night by a violent attack by the enemy east of Cerny on a front of 500 yards on both sides of the Ailles-Passy Road. The enemy occupied a line of trenches evacuated by us. Our artillery caused great havoc among the enemy, who was unable to push the attack further in spite of all his efforts.

An earlier report stated: In spite of a recrudescence of the bombardment east of Cerny, only local engagements were fought in the Cerny-Ailles sector, where we repulsed enemy attempts at various points. The enemy violently bombarded the front lines east of Rheims.

The Cerny-Ailles sector is situated in the centre of the Chemin des Dames ridge. Cerny stands at the intersection of the main thoroughfare and a road rising from the Aisne Valley towards Laon. Ailles is two miles further east, a mile north of the Chemin des Dames.
