♦ — NEW INDUSTRIAL AWARDS. WAGES AND HOURS FIXED. » Pour Arbitration Court awards were I filed yestorday. The- Auckland Retail Chemists' Award 1 is to operate from July 16. It provides i for a minimum wage for registered assist- • ants of £4 5s a week, and for unregisi tored assistants of £3 ss. Relieving , hands are to be paid 10s a week in addi- . tion, and casual assistants may be employed at not less than 2s 6d an hour, ; The usual holidays are provided, and each worker is to have a fortnight's holiday on full pay after 12 months' service. , No female, unless duly apprenticed, shall be engaged in the manufacture or dispens- , ing of drugs or medicine. Females may be employed as shop assistants, commenc- ; ing at 10s a week in the first year, and rising to 40s in the sixth. The period of , apprenticeship is fixed at four years, with • a probationary period of six months. The wages for apprentices are fixed at 7s 6d, 12s 6d, 17s od, and 32s 6d a week for the first four years respectively. Upholstery Workers. The award regulating the employment of upholstresses will come into force on July 2. The minimum wage for journeywomen is fixed at 30s a week. Journeywomen employed in cutting loose covers for upholstered furniture, other than from patterns, are to be paid not less than Is 6d an hour. The minimum wage for learners is to be 9s a week for the .first year, 13s for the second, 17s fa; the third, 22s for the fourth, and 30s afterwards. No learner over 21 years shall be paid less than 25s a week, except as an under-rate worker. Workers employed by wholesale quilt manufacturers shall be paid for the first six months 9s, for the second 13s, for the third 17s, for the i fourth 225, and _ afterwards 30s. A 10 per cent, bonus is to be paid during the period of the war, and for three months afterwards. Overtime rates are as follow:—Workers earning under 10s a week, 6d an hour; over 10s and up to 225, 9d; 22s and over, time and a-half. The proportion of learners is not to exceed one to every journeywoman, or one where no journeywoman is employed. The usual holiday's are provided. Case of Fork Butchers. In the case of tho Auckland Butchers, Meat Preservers and Bacon Curers Union's dispute an application was previously made by the employers for a separate award for the pork butchers, which was opposed by the union. Under the terms of the new award pork butchers are made parties to the old award, subject to the conditions that clause 1, in reference to the hours of work, shall nob apply to them. The hours for workers employed by pork butchers are 'to be regulated by the Factories Act or. the Shops and Offices Act, as the case may be. A worker shall not be deemed a second shopman unless three or more assistants are employed in the shop. Nothing in the award is to apply to the employment of females as shJD assistants in the shops of the firms mentioned. Ten firms are made parties to the award, which comes in fores on July 2. Carpenters and Joiners. The new award covering carpenters and joiners will' come into operation on July 2. It provides for a week of 44 hours. The minimum rate of wages for journeymen carpenters and > joiners, and joiners' machinists is fixed at Is 6d an hour, with Is a day extra for a man in charge of outside work.. Overtime is to be paid at the rate of time and a-quarter for the first two hours, and time and a-half afterwards up till 10 p.m., .with double time afterthat hour and double time for holiday work. Workers engaged on country work are to bo paid 3s 4d > a day extra. Apprentices are to be paid 10s, 15s, 20s, 255, and' 35s a week for the first' five years respectively.
