DRAINING ST. JOHN'S LAKE.

OPPOSITION TO THE SCHEME. SANCTUARY FOR AQUATIC BIRDS. Strong disapproval of the proposal to drain St. John's Lake and convert it into a park was expressed last evening by the council of the Auckland Acclimatisation Society. Mr. J. Cullen expressed the opinion that the council should take some action with the object of opposing the scheme. Mr. C. A. Whitney said the draining of the lake in the manner proposed would leave only a pond covering 10 acres; in reality, it would Only be a swampy areaRe was opposed to the scheme from a game conservation point of view, and thought the council should pass a strong motion of protest, Eventually, the following resolution was unanimously adopted:—?' While the society offers no objection to the draining of the swampy area, it considers the area of water left should not be less than 60 acres." It was resolved that the resolution should be communicated to every member of Parliament. *
