RENEWAL OF FIGHTING ON THE SOUCHEZ RIVER.
ELECTRIC POWER STATION AGAIN WON.
SLIGHT GAIN OF GROUND DURING THE NIGHT.
Auibalian and N.Z. Cable. (Received 9.30 p.m.) LONDON, June 6. A report from Sir Douglas Haig states: We gained ground slightly during the night south of the Souchez River. The electric power station in the neighbourhood— which there was fierce fighting on Sunday—is now in our hands. We made successful raids south and east of Ypres to-day. Hostile raiders were driven off at nigty southeast of Lens and south of Armentieres, leaving a number of dead.
The scene of the fighting is north-west of Vimy Ridge. At the end of last week the Canadians advanced, stormed and occupied the electric power station and brickstacks, and crossed the river and established a post on the northern hank They took prisoners and captured several strong machine-gun positions. They were unable to hold the ground against a terrific bombardment and counterattacks, but withdrew in perfect order, bringing with them 112 prisoners.
