ASSISTANCE TO SOLDIERS.

WORK OF THE CLAIMS BOARD. The Claims Board of the Auckland Provincial Patriotic and War Relief Association met yesterday. Mr. V. J. Lamer presided, and the following were also present :—Messrs. H. D. Heather, C. J. Tunks, J. F. Ewen and E. Phelan. The number of cases dealt with was 37, and in tho majority of instances assistance was granted. Several claimants were asked to appear personally befoTo the board. It was reported that tho board had been successful in obtaining a pension for a returned soldier who had previously been refused a pension by the Pensions Board. j In respect to a number of other instances where the Pensions Board hag refused pensions to returned men, and in connection with which representations have been made by the Claims I Board, a communication was received • from the Pensions Board stating that it was bound by section 3 of the War Pensions Act, and had no option but to refuse pensions to men whose' injuries had _ not been caused directly by active-, service conditions. If a return of a former illness was experienced while on active service the Pensions Board could not, by the provisions of tho Act, allow a pension. Several returned soldiers notified the board that they had obtained work, and that, therefore, no further assistanco was necessary.

NORTH AUCKLAND. Twelve thousand miles through roadless North Auckland without a hitch is a remarkable record for any car. The Dod™ Brothers' motor-car which piloted tho Parliamentary party did it before undertaking that arduous trip; and is still piitting the miles behind. Ask Henning about its performance. 5
