FLOODING OF RIVER LANDS.
PROTECTIVE WORKS INSPECTED.

rAEEOA. Thursday. An inspection of tin- works in connection with the Waihuu aid Ohineinuri Rivers was made to-day by the Minister for Public Works, the Hon. William Eraser. A large party, including representatives of the Paerou Borough Council, CountyCouncil and Chamber of Commerce, accompanied the .Minister. The party travelled in motor-cars to Tirolua, and thence by motor-launch down the \\ aihou River. Afterwards the Minister \isited Nether* toil, where lie received several deputations. Addressing a meeting of settler 4 whose lands are affected by the river floods, the Minister promised to do all lie could to protect them. Replying to criticisms of the manner m which the drainage scheme is being earned out—a statement, was made that of £150,000 granted. £50.000 had been wastedthe Minister said the stopbanks must bo completed before the river U dredged. An effort was being made, c® added, to purchase another dredge Auckland.
