TRAINING OF DENTISTS.
WORK OF OTAGO SCHOOL HELP FOR STUDENTS PROPOSED. iBT TELEGIUPH.—PHESS ASSOCIATION.] DUNEDIN. Tuesday. Replying to statements recently made by the Minister for Public Health, the acting-director of the Otago University Dental School says that during the last six years 32 men presented themselves for examination under the Acts of 1910 and 1911. The Dentists Act was passed to admit those men who otherwise would have had to pass through college. This deprived the college of a large number of students. Fifteen obtained the degree of Bachelor of Dental Surgery in tho last six years, and two men obtained registration by reason of British qualifications. This explains whence the 49 new dentists starting in New Zoaland during the last six years came, not, as the Minister said, from American 1 colleges. The actingdirector cites instances in refutation of the statement that tho method of educating a dentist in Now Zealand had proved "a colossal failure." As a remedy for the shortage of students the actingdirector .suggests bursaries for dental students such as are proposed for medical students, and home science students and | teacher students attending training colleges.
