PAPER INDUSTRY.
COMMENCED IN QUEENSLAND. The Queensland Government has entered into an agreement with a syndicate whereby, in ' consideration of 'a (strip..' of land along the coast i south of Cairns, the company undertakes to manufacture paper and pay the Government . a royalty of Is on every ton sold. The paper is produced fiom ■ such grasses as blady, Chinese burr, and sida vetusa, ; and from lan tana, all; of which are, to be found on ; tho area granted. The land runs along the coast hear Cairns, from Clump Point to Trinity Bay—a fairly extensive 'area. The company;■ agrees■ to produce 50 tons -of pulp per month. ; -;■;,? Mr.( Hunter, ( Minister ,; for .; Lands, said the company apparently had made successful (experiments,'; as the samples would indicate, 'and the outlook was'; promising. The company j had actually »started • operations, .; and • ho • did not think -it would ; bo long before the paper , was on the market. Some years'■■ ago • another company contracted to manufacture'' paper from wood pulp in the Yarrainan district, and a piece of land there was granted, to them on these conditions. .Owing to some trouble tho paper could not, be manufactured, and Mr. Hunter threatened to cancel the agreement. However, an arrangement (was arrived at by which - the company;, agreed 'to pay ; ; increased ■; timber) royalties until, they commenced to manufacture paper." ..
