GASWORKERS' AWARD. . . .'■ / '.■ .' OTHER AWARDS EXTENDED. The ; Arbitration Court commenced ' its sittings in Auckland yesterday.. The Court comprised Mr. (Justice: Stringer/ president; Mr. ,W. Scott, ; employers' - representative; Mr. J. A. McCullough, workers' representative. ;.-■■ In ,iexpect . to, the; Auckland Gas em-" ployees' dispute,; covering > meter • testers, repairers, cleaners and collectors, and : labourers, Mr. J. Clark, who appeared for the union, stated that a full ; settlement had • been reached, except' in respect to the .' term -of the"' award. {He suggested that the period: should be eight months, oil the ground that '■■. another award J covering another section of workers. was due to expire ;at that time, and :an award covering the whole of the gas employees could 'then be made. ' -.- • , Mr. S. E. Wright, who'appeared for ■. the J employers, • objected r : to such' a :: short period. "; He said '-, the . proceedings in.: the Conciliation Council -involved a great deal of | time and labour; j/^He'/suggested the period should be one year.': ; •'/' ' / ', • V Mr. v Clark '; mentioned that the dispute between the- company and the 'street' lamp maintenance men had-,been"* practically settled. The only ;; point ;■ still undecided ■ was the question when;.the;• award should come into . force. ;'-Twelve men : only ' were affected. :■ He suggested,' that . the : Court should fix April 1 .'as the / day on (which' the award should commence.
; Mr.* Wright 'said that ; although.' only & few men ; were affected : a, large amount of reorganisation would have to .be ; carried out by. the company., The latter required, therefore, as long a time-as- possible. Objection wa s raised, by Mr. Wright, on behalf of the club, on the ground ': that the club did not generally v employ men to drive. < At present it had. a contract ..in connection ; with "a ■ scheme for improving the i course, but i the work'would be completed ■; in a . wcekj ,when s the v club would have no further use for a driver. The ; Court granted exemption, being satis-; fied that the men were not substantially employed in carting.'".- ■■-.
