QUESTION OF CONTINUANCE. ' The medical : examination of .voluntary recruits was the subject of?a' telegram received yesterday ..by Mr. W. Copeland,* hon. secretary of the City Recruiting Committee, from/Sir James Allen, Minister ; for : Defence. The : Minister ■ directed that, in future,: all volunteers be examined in "exactly the same :way as men?called up ; by .; ballot. In ■: reply, • Mr. Copeland .' tele- ; graphed that, no Medical' Board would sit : in April until April 10, and that it would not bo"' available to : . deal with j'volunteers ' until.' April 15. He concluded , as. fol- / lows:—"Shall -we close *; voluntary enlistment • entirely and let : the ballot:, take /its '. course, or /shall we' continue till April 15 with voluntary enlistment , and -medical ' examination "as before, ;or at*' least to enable us-to have the old system in order to ; complete the thirtieth/reinforcement!!' .;
TRANSFERRING RECRUITS. MEN FROM THIRTIETH DRAFT.' The • Defence authorities recently announced / that : men who 7 had : enlisted ; :for the thirtieth / reinforcement / could,;, by applying to the City. Recruiting Committee, be transferred, to earlier drafts'.- As ; a result, 25 men who had enlisted for the thirtieth draft . have been transferred .to the v twenty-seventh /;■ and •/ twenty-eighth drafts, both of which,' are already closed, "and for which ballots have been drawn. The hon. secretary of; the committee, Mr. M. Copeland, yesterday telegraphed to Sir /James Allen, -.
