This is the first appeal to the electors - since,the split in the Labour Party over the conscription issue. Mr. Holman spoke strongly in favour of conscription, and his party was split on the ;-' issue. After much negotiation Mr/-Hok£v man effected a coalition between the sec-;:; ■ tion of his party which adhered to him sand tho Liberal Opposition. There was no contest in eight seats— going to the P.L.L, :: and three to the National Party. Viva : ; retiring members on active Be. vice were >;; opposed,- three supporters of the National ■/ Party by P.L.L. candidates, and a fourth by an Independent,, and one P.LL. by jo, \ Independent.
