Alberti, of Mangawai, has a vineyard situate upon some of the upper flats of the harbour. About 700 vines are cultivated, which yield about three tons of grapes. Last year he sent considerable quantities of grapes to Auckland, and with the remainder made wine. It has a pleasant bouquet and a rough flavour, not unlike port. The wine produced by Mr. Alberti, with primitive appliances, is a proof that the humblest settler can make his own wine here from the juice of the grape. I
