AND HE ADDS:WHY DOESN'T THE GOVERNMENT OFFER A BONUS OF SO MUCH PER ACRE TO ENCOURAGE WHEATGROWING UP THIS WAY, WHICH, IF GROWN, "CHAMPION" WILL BUY AT REGULATION PRICES FIXED BY GOVERNMENT. PLUS ALL CHARGES FROM SOUTH? THE EFFICIENCY BOARD. (To the Editor N.Z. Times, Wellington.) Sir,—Like most innovations it will have an arduous task to perform if the Dominion's maximum contribution to the Empire. is unknown. Doubtless single men are being replaced by married from the Second Division, and if the second is to be called up there will only bo left old men with the assistance of women to work our farms and industries. It is obvious this disastrous war will bo won with the stomach, and it is essential that its maximum supply should bo kept up. For example, in the North Island every available acre of land should be put down in wheat, as it can grow just as good quality as comes from the South, and if some crops should not be milling Quality it would do for fowl feed, and relieve the drawings on milling quality; as a .rule there is very little difference in the price of the two qualities. The next troublo will be; How are we going to get it sown and harvested without labour? A Southern gentleman has suggested that female labour be utilised on our country roads (in place of male) en horseback, armed with rakes to rake into the ruts loose stones. Up this way we have ruts and pits and no loose stones, and during the winter months the necessary requisites would bo a diving suit, junior dredge, or a mud scoop, which would not oatch on with women, though .it might be a recreation as mud. polo. Still I think for outdoor work growing wheat or potatoes would bo more to , their liking. I am, etc., P. VIRTUE. Auckland, March 17, 1917. ATTORNEYS AND AGENTS FOR ABSENTEES.
