MEMORIAL TO FALLEN .MEN.
The proposal for a. memorial to soldiers Jho fell m the Maori ; ;wars, which the Victoria League of Auckland some time ago decided to erect in the reserve at the unction of Wakefield : and , Symonds Street*, has been advanced another stage Yesterday afternoon the president of the eague, Mr. W. J. Macklm, of London, has .been stored in one of the Harbour Board sheds for some months past;, a: difficulty having arisen in obtaining ;a < suitable stone for the obelisk. It was ;at first thought that a hard Oamaru stone would have been suitable, but after a consultation which Mr. Napier .. had > recently iii Wellington .with the Government architect, -: Mr. John Campbell, the league • deeded to adopt Nelson marble. -, ,-, ', ■ r ,' :v; The total cost of )■ the : memorial when | erected will approach. the -sum Jof ' £2000/ ! It is considered ' that it \ will be -the'.- most artistic memorial i D , the Dominion, Mr. Macklin- having ; determined that the i work would not bo unworthy of hi fame as an artist. The -erection is being - supervised by Mr. Gerald Jones, architect.
