AUCKLAND EXPORTS.
The latest returns ,of the exports of the Dominion contain some striking figures bearing on) the increased output of produce from- the Auckland Province. -For the twelve months ended January 31, ) 1917, products valued at, £6,019,047 were sent from the Port of Auckland, compared with £5,065,035 for the year ended January, 1916,' and £4*024,742 for the year ended ? January, 1915. i Thus ' there has been an advance: of nearly two millions in the past two years. The other chief ports show no such advance. In -the two years Wellington's exports have increased in value from £7,006,413 )) to / £7,227,519 Lyttelton shows, an increase from £3,254,453 to . £3,733,220, and Dunedin, an increase from £1,572,599 to £1,966,236/vlt is ; possible : that -the exceptionally rapid strides credited to Auckland in this table may to some extent be) due to the export of gold, which has been irregular and subject to Imperial 4 prohibitions. The true position,) however, • can be ascertained from. the tables giving the exports of the chief New Zealand products. In the year just closed Auckland exported dairy produce to the /value) of £2,133,255// compared with £1,301,248 in the twelve months ended January, 1915/ Two years ago Auckland exported 51.3 per cent, of the butter and 3.2 per cent, of the cheese sent from the Dominion. This year the ;) proportions are ; 66.5 per cent, of the butter and 12.6 per cent, of the cheese v Of the total dairy products exported/Auckland has in the last twelve months sent 34.9 per cent., compared with 27.9 two years ago. - Similar advances are shown in frozen meat and wool exports. Of the total export of beef, mutton, and lamb, Auckland now contributes 11.1 per cent.; '. in the year ended January, 1915, the proportion was 6.6. Of the wool shipments Auckland's direct contribution is ( now 7,8, compared with 6.5 two .years ago. These figures all relate) to the direct shipments from the Port of Auckland only. They give.; some indication of the steady growth rof production in the {province, and they supply the key to the periodical increases of population in the North which so frequently puzzle 'our. Southern neighbours. .
