MAN JUMPS OVERBOARD.

[bt telegraph.— association.] CHRISTCHUECH. Saturday. IA man named Christie, a member of the reinforcements, who was being brought to Christchurch to answer a police charge, created a sensation when the Maori entered the harbour this morning by jumping overboard. The alarm was given, the steamer put back, and a hoat was lowered. The man was a strong swimmer, but was overtaken and caught. He had a life belt under his coat. The constable, who was much concerned at the attempted escape, I handcuffed the man. The Maori was de- | layed for 20 minutes.
