THE DUNEDIN COP WINNER. 1 Bee. who placed the Dunedin Cup to her credit on Wednesday last, has proved a very profitable investment to the Canterbury i sportsman, Mr. H. G. Taylor, whc has been ; 1 associated as owrer of the hve-year-olu daughter of Martian— Disdain ever since she scored her, first victory as a twoyear old at Oamaru in the summer o.i lJil - In that season 800 Btarted on nine different ocasions, scoriae two wins, three seconds, i and two thirds. Her wins included both juvenile events at the North Otago summer meeting and the Pacific Handicap at the , Wellington Cup fixture. As a tnreo-year-old Bee started on eight different occasions for one win, that being in tho Nainai Handicap at the Wellington spring meeting. oho was placed second once and third three times in that season. It was. as a four-year-old that the daughter of Martian placed her best performances on the register, winning _ three races and being placed second in a similar number of her contests. In that season sho faced the barrier in no less than 12 races. Her wins included the Wellington Cup and Wellington Racing Club Handicap at Trentham and tho Farewell Handicap at the South Canterbury spring meeting. In the Wellington Cup referred to Bee regis- ; tered 2m 31 8-5s for the mile and a-half. She 1 i was taken to Australia last autumn, and I since her return she has registered a uecond ! and a first in as many starts. Her performance in winning the Dunodin Cut) with 1 9st 21b on a bad ground must be regarded as a worthy effort. In all. Bee has won , upwards of £3000, including place money, i during her four seasons' racing on the New Zealand turf. THE TOTALISATOR AT RANDWICK. It would seem that the Australian Jockey Club has had some keon observers witnessing i the operation of the totalisator at Ellerslie of recent years, for the Sydney authorities are making suitable arrangements to accommodate tho rush that must come at Randwick when the totalisator method of speculation is thoroughly understood in that State. It is said that the totalisator building to be erected at Randwiok will contain 40 selling windows, increasing to 50, inside the paddock, and 82 in the leger and on the fiat. There will be 30 pay-out windows ' in the paddock, where the building will bo 202 ft by 71ft. The building on the fiat, is , to bo of one storey only, so that the view i of spectators in the paddock and leger I will not be obstructed. At Ellerslie accom- ■ modation is provided for 86 different people to obtain tickets at the same time—l 6 inside and 20 outside—while there are 47 pay-out window#—2o inside and 27 outside. Those concerned appear to be confident that the totalisator will be installed at Randwick in readiness for the spring meeting. OHINEMURI JOCKEY CLUB. For the Ohinemuri Jockey Club's meeting, to be held at Paeroa on March 17 and 19, entries are due to close with the secretary, Paeroa. or Mr. F. D. Yonge, Auckland, by nine o clock to-night. A particularly attractive programme is presented. LEAVES FROM. MY NOTEBOOK. The secretary of the Te Aroha Jockoy Club has arranged in alphabetical order a list of the horses engaged at the approaching meeting of the country club. This shows that 163 different horses have been nominated, and also gives some idea what the sport costs horsoownors to provide for country meetings. By the time training fees, riding fees, transit charges, and accommodation expenses aro seriously taken into account it would be safe to conclude that at least £4 10s a week for the upkeep of each horse would be assuring a very low estimate. This means that about £700 a week is expended lor the upkeep- of horses competing at our country fixtures. It also means that the care of those horses alone gives employment to perhaps 150 people. Tho work witnessed at Alexandra Park during the week suggests that the autumn meeting of tho Otahuhu Trotting Club, which will commence on Saturday next, is bound to prove a success. The acceptances received last night were very satisfactory and provido for some very interesting contents. Amongst those drawn in .the ballot this week was George Price, private trainer to the " Hiehden" people, who have raced with a fair share of success for the past few years. All the stable horsemen— Oliver, W. 8011, and T. Metcalfe—have also been selected for service to the Empire. Colonel Soult is already at Wanganui awaiting his Cup engagement on Thursday next. The son of Soult was working in liis usual free style before he left EJ.lerslio, He was sent in oharge' of T. Snodgrass, who acts as head lad at F. McManemm's. When Housewife won the Woodvillo Cup on Wednesday her victors was fully anticipated by Aucklariders, who shared to some 1 extent in the good figures returned by the totalisator. Glendalough was reported to have become entangled in wire this week, but fortunately nothing serious happened to W. Sharpe'a charge. Tho three-year-old Marble Arch—Maheno gelding in F. McManemin's stable appears to have settled down nicely since being : placod. in l f ?ht work. The latest list for Empire service includes the names of W, Ryan, L. Morris, and R. , E. Manson, while the well-known sportsman, W. H. Cowan, also figures in the list. El Gallo oontinues to thrive on the treatment meted out to him by P. Jones at head- ■ quarters. t ' Sylvan Knight was again indulged m a ; schooling essay on Thursday last and disi played improvement. ! Troublesome is to be tried over country • this winter in New Zealand, and is now in • easy work at headquarters. Kitty Bellairs might have been a competi--1 tor at Hamilton yesterday but for her party misning the final payments. Several horsemen riding at Woodville on Wednesday and Thursday wore seen in tho Baddta at Claudelands yesterday. [ The Perth City Council has decided to Port the Government's movement to ; abolish bookmakers in West Australia. > ————————— 1 COUNTRY RACING CLUBS. ■ ANNUAL CONFERENCE. [BY TELEGBAPH —OWN CORRESPONDENT. ] , HAMILTON, Friday, j Eight clubs were represented at the annual conference of Auckland country racing clubs. Mr. H. T. Gillies, president of the Hamilton Club, occupied the chair. Among the dele--5 gates present were Messrs. Vercoe (Hamilton), 5 Elliott and Weal (Waipa), Poland and Clarkin (Ohinemuri), Thomas (Taumarunui), Stevens (To Kuiti), Reece and Dodd (Opotiki), Hines i (Te Aroha), Carr and Clark (Rotorua). 5 The question of the revision of the repre--5 sentation on the District Committee and to , the annual conference was amongst other ' things disoussed. 5 Mr. H. Poland, M.P., said the position at the present time was that the 17 country . clubs had only five representatives on the , District Committee, while the Metropolitan 3 Club had as much power as the whole of the » remaining clubs, and at the conference the , metropolitan clubs' had as much voting 9 power as the whole of the country clubs, i Greymouth was classed as a metropolitan club, yet it was not nearly of tho importance of the Hamilton Club. i On the motion of Mr. Poland, the conj foronce decided to enter its strong objection to the present system of representation at ' the Now Zealand Racing Conference and dis--0 trict committees. 9 A sub-committee, consisting of Messrs. H. . Poland, H. T. Gillies, and Carr, was appointed to deal further with the matter, • i The cijnference decided to recommend tho j nomination of Messrs. R. H. McKenzie (Mangere), Somers (Tc Aroha), and Carr (Rotorua) as representatives of the country 1 clubs on the Auckland District Committee, , and asked country clubs tp support their e candidature. It was also decided to recommend the nomination of Messrs. W. H. Her- ' ties. MiP.,. and H. Poland, M.P., as the representatives of the Auckland district clubs to tho Racing Conference. The appointment of a .joint handicapper was discussed, but no action was taken. Mr. R J. Wynne brought up the quesj -tion of the extension of privileges to horseowners and others. It was decided that a conference of secretaries should be held at the Auckland June 8 ' Meeting to discuss this and other matters ft of interest to clubs. v The following dates were fixed for the ' 1917-18 meetings:— December 8; .Waipa. December IB; Thames. December 26 and 27: Taumarunui, February 2; Te Kuiti. HAMILTON RACING CLUB. BEDFORD WINS THE CUP. Beautiful weather prevailed at Claudelands yesterday, where a record attendance was registered at the opening of the Hamilton Racing Club's Summer Meeting. O'Shea— The course was in good order, and tho general arrangements satisfactory. Mr. A. W. Gordon, stipendiary steward, was present, but minor matt-era only engaged his attention. NOTES ON THE RACING. Just after the start for the Trial Handicap Silver Lupin fell and unseated W. Ryan. Lady Energy, who finished third, was always prominent, but too much was made of her, otherwise she would have been second. The winner and Bowler both fought out the issue gamely. Lightning never looked like suffering defeat in the Claudelands Handicap, though Tinoreka carried her 9st 2lb gamely into second place. Empire delayed tho start of the Tamahero Stakes by his fractious habits and was badly placed when the field went off. Rekanui won easily, though Demotic, who failed to move kindly in the early stages, was finishing on boldly. Woody Glen was racing prominently for a term. Sanacre ran about a lot, but with a little experience should turn out a good performer. Munster flattered his supporters about half a mile from home in the Cup. but ones into the straight Bedford rushed to the front and looked to be winning easily. However, ho had to strain every nerve to defeat a determined effort by Lady Ponury. Nevertheless, the race should work most improvement in | Bedford. Gluepot fell at the last fence in the Wai- . mai Hurdles Handicap, when he appeared , to possess excellent prospects. He was just • making a serious effort at the time. Tennessee, the winner, is on tho improve. To Onga was moving along nicely in the clos- ' ing stages, and should be improved by i the gallop. i Loyal Arch was finishing on fast when I placed third in the Karamu Welter Handii cap. Tho horseman did not appear to suit ■ her temperament. O'Shea rode a great race [ on the winner, Achilledes, and but for the i horsemanship displayed Fionnuala must > have gained the honours. Pink Tie's failure in the Hautapu Hack ■ was costly to followers of form. The i daughter of Multifid was never prominent. , meeting with disappointment early. She • i made one effort at tile home turn, but had 'no real chance at that stage. Kereone was ■ prominent in the middle stages, and should ' benefit by racing Glenspiro had to be ridden desperately ' by Deeley to defeat Kauri King in the 1 Stewards' Handicap. The latter was responsible for most of the running. Tinopai ' threatened to be dangerous at the turn 1 for home, and her third was . creditable. ; The ground evidently did not suit Torotoro. t TO-DAY'S ACCEPTANCES. : The following are the acceptances frr events to bo decided to-3ay:— MAIDEN HANDICAP, six furlongsKeystone 8.5, Bezmar 8.4, Pink Tie 8.3, Master Florence 8.3.
