GIFTS FOR SOLDIERS.
APPEAL FOR READING MATTER. Reading matter— and magazines —is urgently needed" by the Auckland ■Women's Patriotic League .for use on i transports and in camps and hospitals. j Letters received from soldiers show how J deeply appreciated such gifts are. In one letter, written at sea, occurs the following passage:--"The games and reading matter will be and are the cause of spending many a happy hour on board. Thanks to the good people of New Zealand, we are not wanting for anything, and hope wo will prove a credit to dear old New Zealand." The commandant at Motuihi, in a letter, stated .—" Please convey to the ladies of your association the hearty thanks of the N.CO.'s and men for your thoughtful gift of books and periodicals." The generosity of the people of the Auckland Province is proved by the 'fact that for nearly 18 months no transport has left their shores without a liberal supply of games, music and literature. Games such as chess, draughts, and dominoes are a welcome addition to the books
