GERMANS CAPTURE FOCKSHANI AND 3910 PRISONERS.
CLAIM TO HAVE PIERCED THE RUSSIANS' LINE. ENEMY GAINS GROUND ON TRANSYLVANIAN FRONT. Australian and N.Z. Cable. (Received 11.20 cm.) LONDON, Jan. 8. A German communique states: "Wo pushed back the enemy between the Putna and Oitoz Valleys, and drove the Russians and Roumanians from fortified mountain positions at Odobesti, towards the Putna. We stormed the Milcova position, and pierced the enemy's second line between Fockshani and Jarestea. Wo crossed the Fock-shtuu-fiolotesti Road, and captured Fockshani, with 3910 prisoners and three guns." A later German communique states: "We are pursuing the defeated Russians near Fockshani." ■ ■ i i i. Fockshani lies 45 miles west and slightly north of Galatz, on tho railway which runs through the centre of Moldavia, The River Milcov flows through the town, which is a commercial centre of some importance. Fockshani was at the western end of the Sereth line of permanent fortifications, as they existed before the war, Galatz being at the other end.
