ULTIMATUM TO GREECE

TWO DAYS' GRACE GIVEN

GERMAN GAINS IN ROUMANIA

11 11 RUSSIAN COUNTER-OFFENSIVE

FIGHTING ON THE RIGA FRONT

The allies have sent a new Note to Greece, which is practically a 48 hoars' ultimatum. An envoy of the Venizeiist Government who is visiting Paris states that the Greek staff is controlled by a German. who, with the King, is preparing to attack the allies. The Russians have made strong attacks west of the Riga* Mitau road. A German communique admits that they extended recent gains on the Aa River, on the same front. The Germans' offensive in Roumanla continues without relaxation. It is thought they are attempting to occupy the whole country. The enemy claims the capture of Fockshani and nearly 4000 prisoners. German attacks on the Sereth line were completely unsuccessful. The French critic, M. Marcel Hutin, attaches importance to the Russian offensive on the Sereth River. The Austrians admit that it is on a large scale. Dutch reports assert growing evidence of dissensions among the Central Powers. A leading German newspaper publishes a warning from its Sofia correspondent that Bulgaria cares nothing for sentiment, and friendship with Germany should be put on a fixed basis. In a recent speech the Bulgarian Premier said Bulgaria was ready for peace, and her work had already been brought to a successful conclusion. It is reported that the Pope will reply to both Germany and the United States that the time is inopportune for a definite peace movement. •* In a speech at Berlin, Mr. Gerard. American Ambassador to Germany, is reported to have declared that the relations between the two countries were never better, and that he brought the olive branch from Mr. Wilson. The American State Department is demanding the text of the speech. Travellers from Germany state that great preparations are being made for an offensive early, in the spring. - ' «
