USE OF PRISON LABOUR.
-o T'lte question of utilising prison labour for | road-making has recently been discussed by local bodies, the matter arising out of"a suggestion made, in this respect by the Rotorua Chamber of Commerce. The- Minister for Justice, Hon. Dr. McNab. uas replied to the Kawice's Bay County Coun- , cil on the matter, stating that at present some prisoners are engaged in opening ..a road from Waimarino to Lake Tauno. The scheme proposed by the Rotorua Chamber ,of Commerce was quite impossible. The j only available prisoners for road-making i are these working at Rotorua, tree plant- ! ing, and under no circumstances could *he • ; Minister agree to the important work of afforestation being terminated to enable them to work in different parts of New Zealand on the roads. "It is a mistake." said the Minister. "to suppose th? w« ; have a laree number of prisoners in ih'is country. Fortunately our proportion is much smaller than in other part;; of the 1 Empire, and we have at present ve'rv nearly all the prisoners engaged in useful occupations, including road-making, and I ' can hold out no hope at present of -m extension of the prisoners' activities in other parts of the country."'
