ANOTHER MAORI IN COURT.
DEFEATING JUSTICE ALLEGED.
[BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN" CORRESPONDENT.]
ROTORUA. Friday. A M.\ORr named W'i Hapi was charged at the Magistrate's Court to-day with having attempted to defeat the cause of justice at Auckland on September 29 by secreting a native named Mahia Hakeke, and sending him secretly from Auckland, thereby preventing him from being further crossexamined as a witness for the defence in the trial of Pukepuke Kanara in connection with the Maungapohatu affray.
Mr. Selwyn Mays prosecuted, and 2,is. M. H. Hampson appeared for the defence. The evidence ot Mahia Hakeke and others showed that Mahia, in the Supreme Court, made a statement at Rua's trial contradictory of his evidence at Pukepuke Kanara's trial and it was stated that, through the instrumentality of Wi Hapi, Mahia left Auckland, thereby avoiding cross-examination.
The accused pleaded not guilty, reserving his defence, and was committed for trial at the Supreme Court at Hamilton. Bail allowed was fixed at £300. and two sureties, to be Europeans, of £150.
