Singer) pleaded guilty to stealing a sack of gum, valued at £7, the property 0 f Maxwell and Co. Helme alsn appeared foe sentence on a charge of stealing 6cu t of cast-iron, allied at 365, the. property of Robert Graydon. Senior Sergeant liutledge 'stated that Ilclme was a bottle gatherer, who had a staMe in Hobson Street. After Helm© had said he got the gum from Omnmings the latter admitted taking it from Maxwells. Counsel said that prior to the theft both men had been on a drinking bout. ( unimings had never been in trouble before, and Mr. Maxwell had such a high opinion of him that ho was prepared to take him back into his employment. He line was a married man with a family, and had never been guilty of dishonesty before. umming? was convicted and placed on probation lor three years, upon the condition that he should take out a prohibition order and undertake not to go cut after 8 p.m. unless in the company of his wife. Helm© was similarly dealt with in respect of the charge of the theft of irc-n, and convicted and discharged fur the theft of the gum. DRUNKENNESS. A first offender for drunkenness was fined ss, and another forfeited his bail, 10s.
