THE MEN BEHIND THE GUN. 'I're saying throughout the army is that the gunners never cease work. All night long and all day long behind the lines you hear the thud, thud, thud of the field and guns ; and after hearing their ceaseless thunder the first thing one asks is: When do they sleep? Gunners never sleep; that is to say, batteries keep on with diminished crews night and day and take their turn for sleep as best they can. The human body is extraordinarily adaptive. The gunners off duty will sleep in their dug-outs while their battery is thundering forth every minute. Thev say they sleep well and find a silent night strangely uncomfortable^
