RUSSIANS WORKING THEIR WAY ROUND HALICZ.
BOTH SIDES PREPARING FOR A GREAT BLOW.
GERMANS SHOWING SYMPTOMS OF NERVOUSNESS.
ROUMANIAN SUCCESSES AND DOBRUDJA RETIREMENT. By Telegraph Press Association Copyright. Australian and N.Z. Cable (Keceived 7 p.m.) LONDON. Nov. 2. The Petrograd correspondent of the Morning Post writes: " Continuous hard fighting on General Brussiloff's front, of which there has been little information lately, is beginning to fructify. The Russians have again pushed forward against the Germans' utmost efforts. Although the enemy holds fast nearest Halicz the Russians are steadily working their way all round. It is significant that the Germans have brought up the Third Guard Division to the immediate neighbourhood of Halicz. This division has oscillated between the east and west fronts when the situations were critical. The Russians have made noteworthy progress in the Vladimir region, and are cutting a lane through the entanglements. Their armoured cars, followed by infantry, have made all the gains good. " The general impression left by the latest information is that both sides are preparing for a great blow, with the Russians attacking. There, is much speculation as to the reason for the strong German bombardments of the northern sector. They are probably due to nervousness, as there is no prospect of drawing off troops from General Brussiloff's sector. The nervousness of the enemy is interpreted here as a portent of impending disaster. '*' All things indicate that the Russians have the upper hand. The coincidence of Roumanian successes with the Dobrudja retirement is significant. The Germans were massed thicker in the Dobrudja than anywhere else except on the western front. As co-operation from General Sarrail's army failed to eventuate, the Russians had to retire in the Dobrudja, but an alternative plan existed, of which the effects are beginning to be seen."
