Several messages suggest' that the worst is over in Roumania. The Roumanian victory in Szurgak Valley, on the Transylvanian front, was a brilliant one, and yielded many prisoners and guns. It is exp —d that the full effect of Russian help will be experienced in a few days, and already it is reported that allied pressure on the Transylvanian front has compelled the Germans to recall troops from the Oobrndja. The latest Roumanian communique reports successes at several points, and the German reports are modest. General Falkenhayn claims only 9000 prisoners on this front since October 10. Russian advices state that the allies have assumed the offensive in the northern portion of the Dobrudja. The Servians continue to make progress on the Tserna salient, southeast of Monastir. The Russians have repulsed a series of Turkish attacks ia Persia, and captured two villages in the direction of Hamadan. Greek troops attacked a battalion of Venizelist soldiers, Who fought their way through to Salonika. Seventeen lives were lost through the sinking of the Donaldson steamer Marina by a submarine off the Irish coast. Some Americans are among the missing, and Mr. Wilson has ordered an investigation. The Marina carried neither passengers nor cargo, and had not been requisitioned by the British Government. Thirty.two persons are missing through the sinking of the steamer Cabotia. The Earl of Derby, Under-Secretary for War, states that transport and hospital arrangements in Mesopotamia have beeen greatly improved, and the sickness»rate ranch reduced.
