EMPLOYMENT FOR SOLDIERS
WORK OF THE DEPARTMENT
TOTAL OF 4822 CASES.

DUNEDIS. Monday. Mb. J. R. Samson, officer in charge of the Discharged Soldiers' Information Department, states that the Department's effort* in securing employment for discharged soldiers has been proceeding most satisfactorily. The\Hcm. A. L. Herdman, who is administering the Department, ha« arranged for committees to represent the Department in 36 of the principal towni of the Dominion.
"These committees," said Mr. Samson,- " have worked ho enthusiastically that of 5739 men who have returned to New Zealand, the Department has succeeded in disposing of no less than 4822. The balance of 917 comprises a number of men still convalescing, and not yet discharged by the military authorities, also 175 mr. scattered throughout the Dominion, for whom it may be necessary to finu employment, of whom nine belong to Wbangarei. The total of 175 includes 30 classed 'as "miscellaneous," chiefly men. who desire Government employment and no other." Asked as to particulars, Mr. Samson said the 4822 cases disposed of consisted of 2029 men who have work to return to and men who have re-enlisted or returned to military duty, etc.; 1137 men placed in employment, 1109 who bav<signed " assistance not required," 145 who have left New Zealand and cannot be found, and 402 who have not responded to repeated communications, and men who accepted work found for them by the Department and then failed to make ft start.
