GUNNER IVAN FLEMING.
MENDING LINES UNDER FIRE.
Recently private advice w&s received '). cable to the effect that Gunner Ivan Fleming had been awarded the Distinguish,,! Conduct Medal for bravery during t!« recent operations in France.
According to a letter received from Sergeant G. Maddock, the Germans had been heavily shelling a town "somewhere in France." and had cut a number of telephone wire?, including the line? hi the Artillery Brigade headquarters, ft man was told off to go out to mend th» wires, and as ho was on his way, Gunner Fleming met him and volunteered to go, although he was aware of the danger.' While assisting to repair the wires Gunner Fleming, was wot nded by several pieces. of metal from a ilieil which burst close to him. The colonel expressed ereat admiralion for Fleming's plucky act. Sergeant Maddock remarks that 'his people had every reason to he proud of him, as he volunteered for the job, well knowing that he was on a dangerous i<>m! and on" very risky work. He was hit in the arm which was broken, and receiver] fl Ps |j wounds in hip, back, and shoulder. The last-mentioned wound wan verv painful until a piece of metal wa-i extracted. '
