GUILTY OF "SHOUTING"
CASES AT TE AWAMUTU.

Five charges arising from breaches of the anti-" shouting" clauses of the War Regulations were heard by Mr. E. Rawson, S.M., at the Police Court yesterday. Two natives, WaJwoT Pirituria and Tomraoka, were charged by Constable Doyle, the first with handing over money to purchase liquor, and the second with accepting the money. Both pleaded guilty, and, through counsel, Mr. Hawkins, asked for leniency, on the grounds that tho regulations had only recently como into force and were not properly understood by Maoris. Whilst notices of warning to Europeans were displayed in the bars there were no translations for tho guidance of natives. Each was convicted and fined £f>, with costs 17s. W. McCarthy, licensee of the Alexandra Hotel at Pirongia, W. M. Chappell, and A. R. Knight were also charged with breaches of the regulations. It was alleged that on Saturday, October 21, Chappell and Knight, two residents .of tho district, entered the hotel, Chappell tendering ono shilling for drinks, which was accepted by McCarthy, who served the liquor. The incident was witnessed by Constable Farrell, who was in the bar at the time. Just after drinks were served a third man rushed into tho bar and announced the approach of Constable Doyle, who was riding into tho township. Later, when accused of the offeuce by the two constables, no explanation was offered by tho licensee. The defence, which was conducted by Mr. Dowries, admitted that Chappell had tendered one shilling, but contended that Knight had paid sixpence for his own drink, which was handed to Chappell as change. McCarthy was fined £10, and Chappell and Knight were each fined £5 Is, with costs 7s. McCarthy is tho firsj* licensee to be convicted for actually supplying liquor in contravention of these regulations.
