FAILURE OF GERMAN RAID ON TRANSPORT SERVICE.
TWO ENEMY DESTROYERS SUNK BY BRITISH FLOTILLA
BRITISH DESTROYER MISSING AND ANOTHER DISABLED. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association, LONDON, Oct. 27. The Admiralty reports that during last night 10 enemy destroyers attempted a raid on our channel transport service and failed. One empty transport was sunk, the crew being saved. Two enemy destroyers were sunk and the rest were driven off. The British destroyer Flirt is missing, and is feared to be lost, Nine of the crew were saved. The destroyer Nubian, which had been disabled by a torpedo, was being towed, when the tow-rope parted owing to bad weather, and the destroyer grounded. The Flirt was launched in 1897. It was a vessel of 360 tons, with a speed on trials of 50 knots. Its complement was 60 officers and men. The Nubian ib one of the earlier ocean-going destroyers, having been launched in 1909. Its displacement is 985 tons, and its speed is nearly 35 knots. Its complement was 71.
