FIFTY YEARS AGO.
TELEGRAPHIC CHARGES. REDUCTION IX RATES. (From the JlEßiliD of October 29, 1866.) The Engineerin-Cliief is now tho superintendent of tho telegraph from Auckland to the Waikato. Tho office will bo open for tho reception of messages from nino to one o'clock, and from two to six each day, except Sunday. Tho rates aro very much reduced, being now less than onehalf of their former rate. It will thus bo seen that there is now a great deal more accommodation than formerly at a considerably cheaper rate. As population increases on the lino of route the rate will doubtless be reduced still further. The telegraphic charges, as advertise! in tho Herald, at this date, were: Auckland to Onehunga, Is for 10 words, and Id for each additional word. Auckland to Cambridge, 6s for 10 words, and 6d for each additional word.
