RAILWAYS WORKS.
THE OLD .ENGINE SHEDS. i REMOVAL STARTS SHORTLY. DEPARTMENT'S OPERATIONS. The work of connecting Quay Street with its waterfront extension, skirting Mechanics' and St. George's Bays, cannot be undertaken until the railway engine sheds, near the King's Wharf, have been removed. The City Council has made representations in the matter to the Railways Department, but the latter has been handicapped in the work, owing to delay in the receipt of requisito materials. These having just cpme to hand, it is now hoped that the new engine sheds on the Mechanics' Bay reclamation will be put into use in about a fortnight's time. The Department will then proceed to have the ild sheds removed, thus clearing the way for the Quay Street road construction operations. The new engine sheds have been delayed in occupancy for the lack of sufficient glass wherewith to complete the skylights, md also pending the arrival of valves in jonnection with the water service. These, and the necessary coaling cranes, have only recently come to hand, and the lastnamed are now being placed in position. Already a new water-vat, with a capacity of 20,000 gallons, has been erected near the new sheds. The removal of the two goods sheds from King's Drive to their new site on Quay Street extension, near the new engine sheds, is in hand. About half of the "A" shed, the smaller of the two, has been shifted, and is being re-erected in its new position, and the remaining portion is expected to be moved in about a week. The " B" shed, the larger of the two, will then be transferred to the waterfront site, This will probably have to bo taken in four sections, at the rate of one section per fortnight. This work will be commenced as soon as "A" shed is ready. Meantime the goods office has been established on the Quay Street extension area, and the goods cranes are in process of removal thither. Nothing is likely to be done for some time in connection with tho new railway station, which is eventually to be constructed at the foot of Eden Street. Meanwhile, after the goods sheds have both been cleared off the site, extensive alterations to sidings will have to be undertaken.
