MAORI WAR MEMORIAL,

STONE FOR THE OBELISK. For some considerable time past the erection of the Victoria League's memorial to the heroes of the Maori War has been hindered by difficulties regarding the choice of stone to be used in the obelisk. The sculptor, Mr. Eyre Macklin, specified Oamaru stone, but as the Victoria League executive considered this ftone might not prove sufficiently durable, a cablegram was sent to the High Commissioner requesting him to explain the situation to Mr. Macklin. The cabled reply states that Mr. Macklin agrees that Nelson marble would prove more suitable than the 6tone specified, and suggests that the Auckland committee hear the extra cost. At a meeting of tho executive of the league, held yesterday, it was therefore decided to forward a second cablegram to the High Commissioner, stating that tho league would be quite willing to relieve Mr. Macklin of the completion of the contract, he to retain the £750 already paid to him, and the league to retain the balance of the £1000 granted by the Government as a contribution towards the completion of the memorial. The colonial architect has been requested to give the league a full report with regard to a suitable stone for the obelisk.
