PRISONERS FOR SENTENCE. THEFT AND FALSE PRETENCES. TWO OTHER CASES REMANDED. Tubes prisoners appeared for sentence before His Honor Mr. Justice Hosking at the Supreme Court yesterday morning. Leslie Herbert Howe, years, » labourer, was sentenced to two years' reformative treatment on a chargo of obtaining a sum of £7 by false pretences : from A. J. Broadfoot, solicitor, of Te Kuiti. A similar sentence was imposed on a second charge of breaking, entering, j and theft, but the two terms were ordered !to be concurrent. Howe had previously : pleaded guilty to both charges. j In connection with the charge of false pretences it was stated that the prisoner went to Mr. Broadfoot, and by representing that Neahihi Hughes, of Te Kuiti, owed him, Howe, £15 for wages, he obtained on account a sum of £7. He explained the urgency of the demand by saying that his mother was ill. The value of" the goods stolen from the house of Ngahihi Hughes was £10 15s, and, besides a gold watch, included several articles of clothincr. His Honor remarked that Howe appeared to bo starting life badly. The Prisoner: The money was not taken with intent to defraud. My mother was actually seriously ill, and I intended to return the money. His Honor: Five years ago you were convicted for theft, and you have been supplying natives with liquor. In sentencing the prisoner. His Honor warned him that unless he amended his ■ways he would spend the greater part of his life in prison.
