Browning, of Remuera. passed ' away at bis residence, Rclieiff Road, on ; Tuesday, at the ape of 79 years. Mr. , Browning was horn at Frogmore in the ' roign of William IV. In early life he I was apprenticed to the joinery trade, later ! on he joined H.M.S. Falcon, in which he ! served for four years, principally on the | African coast, in the suppression of the ' slave trade. The warship also assisted j Portugal in subduing a rising of tho I native population in her African territory. :In 1863 Mr. Browning married Miss I Annie Fulbrook, of Mill End, Henleyi oil-Thames, and with her sailed for New ' Zealand in 1864 in the Nelson, sloop of j war, carrying 400 British soldiers to help !in the suppression of the Maori ' war. I After 15 years of market gardening at ; Mount Albert, Mr. Browning moved to ■ Remuera. In later years his health failed I owing to the effects of wounds received 'ii I fighting on the African coast. Mrs. I Browning survives her husband.
