BRITISH GAIN GROUND EAST OF THE STRUMA. SERVIANS AGAIN DEFEAT THE BULGARIANS. By Telegraph— Association—Copyright. Australian and N.Z. Cable. (ReceiTed 10.30 p.m.) • LONDON. Oct. 9, A French communique on the Balkan operations states:—" Eastward of the Struma there have been engagements between the British and the rearguard of the Bulgarian army which is retreating towards the railway. Upwards of 1500 corpses were found at one point. ' The Servians have made progress in the hilly region of Dobropolje. In a fierce battle on the right bank of the Taenia they again defeated the Bulgarians, and captured the village of Sticver. Further west they continue to cross the Tserna, between Dobboveni and Brod. The Bulgarians retreated northward of Brod- French and Russian troops have arrived before the new Bulgarian defensive line stretching from Keraali to Presba Lake." A British official report states:—"On the Struma front our out- • posts'have been pushed forward to the line from Kakaraska through Salman to Houmodis- Further north 1 we occupied the villages of Cavdarmas, Ormanli, and Haznatar."
