FRENCH FIND PERONNE DIFFICULT TO APPROACH.
SURROUNDED BY WATERWAYS ON THREE SIDES. CONCENTRATION OF GUNS ON MONT ST. QUENTIN. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. PAEIS, Oct. 9. The French attacks on Bouchavesnes are directed against Peronne, which has proved exceptionally difficult to approach. West, south, and north it is almost entirely surrounded by waterways, the Sorame on the west and south, and the Great North Canal and the brook Tortille on the north. The latter runs through a deep cleft, which separates the present French position from Mont St. Qucntin- This is only 300 feet high, but the enemy has collected an enormous amount of artillery there, commanding all crossings of the brook and the canal.
