ONEHUNGA COUNCIL.
At a meeting of the Onehunga Borough Council, Mr. J. Rowe, the Mayor, prosided. Messrs. E. V. Sutherland, E. J. Higgins, G. L. Taylor, H. J. Davics, W. J. Brewin, T. If. Pardington, I. Lomas, and C. C. Davis were also present. The Waitomo County Council wrote stating that it had passed the following resolution :— That this council ask the co-operation of all local bodies throughout the Dominion in urging the Minister for Defence to discontinue the voluntary system of recruiting, and that a ballot bo taken for the quota in each military district, as provided in the War Regulations Act, 1916. This council, iii asking for your support, is prompted by the fact that there are too many youths volunteering, whilst older and matured men, eligible for service, are banging back." Mr. E. V. Sutherland; said the Government had the matter in hand, tind lie thought local bodies should not take any responsibility. He moved that no action be taken. v Mr. Taylor seconded. The motion was carried. The following resolution, movod by the Mayor, was carried :—" That in view of the number of Onehunga young men who have been killed and wounded while gallantly fighting for the honour of New Zealand and the Empire in the great war, this council desires to extend to their sorrowing relatives and friends its sincere sympathy and sorrow in the losses sustained by them."
