ENGLISH-BRED HORSE WINS THE METROPOLITAN STAKES.

The A.J.C. Spring Meeting was advanced another stage- to-day. when there was a large attendance, which was estimated at 35,000. As a result of the heavy rains, the going was holding, though it was much better than what could be expected considering the torrential nature of the downpour. A record field of 35 runners was saddled up to contest the Metropolitan Stakes, the New Zealand mare Beo being made favourite. She was never, howerer, prominent in the race, and eventually wound up in sixth place. Quinologist, who was always handy, responded brilliantly at tho distance, and defeated the more-fancied Polycrates in easy style. Quinologist and Polycrates wore both bred in England. '■ New York set a great pace in the Steeplechase, but lost a lot of ground by jumping sideways, and he eventually fell. McSeveny, his rider, was injured. Busra succumbed to injuries. , . , ~ The rider of Secret Service was declared short weight in the Squatters' Handicap, and Clydeside was placed third. ~ The following are the details of the racing:—,

SOUTH AUSTRALIAN DERBY. Aust. and N.Z. Cable. ADELAIDE, Oct. 7. The following .was the result of the South Australian Derby:— by Pistol—Guncarriage, 1; Boontree, 2; St. Ami,. 3. Six started. Nevka, won by two and a-half lengths. Time, 2m 395.

BALBOA WINS SPRING HANDICAP. [BY telegraph.—press association]. HASTINGS, Saturday.

A wet afternoon caused a decline in the attendance at the Hawke's Bay Jockey Club's Spring Meeting. The racing was quite up to the high standard usually witnessed at this fixture. The totalisatoT investments amounted to £15,242. against £17,292 on the same day last year. Results:—

TOMOANA HACK HURDLE RACE.-}, Bon Reve (H. Manson), 1; 5, Kirkby J. Brady). 2; 3. Surtax (A. Poulgram), 3. Also started: 4 Jem; 2, The Summit; 8, Byron; 7 Nicomar; 9. Hylans; 10, Manawapango; 6 Turehau. A good finish resulted in Bon Reve winning by two lengths, with three lengths dividing the second and third horses. Turehau and Nicomar fell. Time, 3m 255. MAIDEN HACK RACE.-l. Hopeite (C. Stowe), 1; 4, Multum (A. Reed), 2; 8, Pour parlfe'r (J. O'Shea). 3. Also started: 10. Best Girl: 14. Desmoynes: 14. Kotea; 3, Idyllic; 6 Shiela; 9, Multive: 11, Headache; 5, Tornea; 12. Eldepee; 7, Hylami: 2, Te Araroa: 10. Black Powder; 13. Bonitas. The largo field got away to an excellent start. In a ding-dons; finish the favourite won oy Calf a length, with the same distance separating the second and third horses. Time, lm 275.

GLENARAY HANDICAP.-2 Sea Lord (P. Brady). 1; 1. Multiplication (S. Reed), 2; 4. Step (W. Mackay). 3. Also started 5, L'adoguer: 3, Zeus; 6. Watchful; 7, Hygia; 8, Shy Girl. A good race throughout. Sea Lord winning easily by four lengths, with two lengths between the second and third horses. Time, lm 261 a. • FLAXMERE HACK HANDICAP.-5, Triais(C. Stowe). 1:1. Teka (A. Olliver) 2; 2. Honey Bee (W. Price). 3. Also started: 7 Shaki; 8, Golden Glade; 3, Lady Multifid- 4 Multaine; 6, Lilydale; 9, Genec. From an excellent start Trials shot out, but was goon passed by Multaine. Entering, the home turn Trials came away again, winning a good race by a length, with h 'If a length between the second and third hortes. Time, lm 19s. HASTINGS STAKES.-3. Vagabond 'R. Reed). 1; 1. Estland (J. O'Shea) 2; 5, Astrophel (W. Price) 3. Also started: 2, C.rohurst; 4. Simonides; 6, Bagdad; 7, Chuckle. A good race from start to finish, a length separating the three placed horses. Time. 51 l-ss. SPRING HANDICAP.— Balboa (J. O'Shea). 1; 2, Welcome Nugget (A. Reed), 2; 7, St. Elmn (G. McLean). 3. Also started: 4. Multiply; 6, Indigo; 8, Blackall; 6. Hyllus; I. Atuatoro; 9, Settler. Hyllus and Atuatoro led to the back stretch. A great race ensued in the run home, where Balboa came with a splendid run, winning by a length, four lengths separating tho second and third horses. Time. 2m 15 3-ss.
