'ARIS, Oct 7.

A communique states: " There has been a strenuous artillery struggle on both banks of the Somme. No, infantry actions have been undertaken except a slight advance eastward of Bouchavesnes.

" Our heavy artillery in the Woevre effectively shelled military roads and railway stations.

" Bombs were dropped in Belfort. The damage was insignificant."

An earlier communique stated: Our reconnaissances have penetrated the support trenches, which were bombarded, with grenades. " There is great artillery activity at Verdun. " Our aviators have been successfully active despite the weather. They report great traffic on the enemy's railways."
